EAST NORRITON — PECO donated $15,000 to Mission Kids on, a Child Advocacy Center in Montgomery County, for the purposes of purchasing computers, tablets and cloud-based software according to a press release.

“We want to express enormous gratitude to PECO for this wonderful donation to Mission Kids,” Abbie Newman, executive director of Mission Kids said in a press release. “PECO has shown steadfast support since our inception, and we very much attribute our success to the tremendous support we receive from our community partners. We are so thankful to each and every individual who helps us in the fight against child abuse. There is still much more work to be done and we look forward to one day when our community is free of child abuse.”

The computers that will be bought with the money donated by PECO will be used for employees and the tablets will be used to entertain children in the waiting room.

On Friday, Newman explained that the child advocacy center has had the same computers since their opening in 2009. She said that the average life of a computer is approximately three years.

“These advancements expand Mission Kids’ scope of work and ability to serve the most vulnerable victims of abuse in Montgomery County,” according to a press release.

“You have to have up to date technology,” Newman said calling the donation “timely and welcome.”

Newman said PECO has worked with Mission Kids in the past but this was the most money they have given at one time.

Looking forward, Newman said Mission Kids needs to next update their video recording system for interviews, which runs on an outdated format that doesn’t have a warranty. She said the organization will be replacing that system sometime this year.

Mission Kids in a non-profit organization started in 2009 to make it easier for victims of child abuse to go through the court system during cases of alleged child abuse. They allow a victim to be interviewed in a friendly environment and records the interviews so they only have to be interviewed once, according to their website. In 2013, Mission Kids conducted over 400 forensic interviews.
